Q: What made you get into Fitness and Competition?
A: I have always been physically active by way of dancing and then later on in high school working out. I never thought of competing until a good friend of mine called me and told me she found a fitness competition and that I was going to enter. From then on, I have been competing.
Q: a) How has fitness modeling changed your social life? b) How much of a social life do you have? c) What sacrifices have you made in pursuit of your goals?
A: a) Fitness modeling has changed my social life in ways such as when out at events or outings, I can’t eat or drink what everybody else is indulging in. I can’t stay up late because I can’t eat after a certain time and most important, sleep is one of the key components in health and fitness. b) I have a social life, but it takes understanding people in my circle to know that sometimes I can’t stay out late or not go out at all because of being tired from grueling workouts during the day. At the end of the day, it takes great understanding of what I do, and I put hard work into my craft and I am not going to do anything to mess that up. c) I love what I do and everybody around me knows this and that makes them support me even more so I have not yet had to sacrifice anything.
Q: What is one of the biggest sacrifices you’ve made, and was it worth it?
A: I have not sacrificed anything big, but I have sacrificed small things. Now that I think about it, FOOD! I enjoy eating such things as pizza, cake and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches…and is it worth it?? Yes!! In every way.
Q: How do you keep yourself motivated and on-track through the grueling dieting in the last few weeks?
A: Keeping my eye on the prize is my motivation. I train for 2 months straight so I feel stronger than ever towards the end even though I am going harder and drinking small amounts of water. I look back on those two months and the thought pushes me through when I see all the hard work paying off.
Q: Is it hard to exercise and lift on such a low calorie diet when getting ready for an event?
A: Yes, it is hard to push through those grueling workouts on the meal plans. I have a fast metabolism so I have to up my portions in the 6 meals I intake within that day so that helps out a lot.
Q: Looking back on what you have accomplished so far, what is one thing you would change if you could, knowing what you do now?
A: One thing I would have changed looking back is knowing earlier that I had and have what it takes to be the next face in fitness.
Q: What do you wish you had known before you started doing shows?
A: I wish I would have known how expensive it is to compete in these fitness competition.
Q: What do you feel is the most important thing a fitness model can have in order to be successful in this sport?
A: I feel the most important thing a fitness model can have in order to be successful in this sport is DRIVE. With drive you will always achieve!
Q: What advice would you give to young players who want to play professional football?
A: I would tell them to work hard at what they do and stay focused. Their hard work will get them there.
Q: Do you have a pregame ritual?
A: I listen to Hip Hop music before every game.
Q: What do you do to train as a wide receiver?
A: I work on my hands a lot and workout hard in the weight room to get stronger and faster.
Q: Who’s the one figure in football you look up to the most?
A: Terrell Owens
Q: What’s your favorite pre-game meal?
A: Pasta – need the carbs!
Q: What is your best football memory?
A: When I scored 3 touchdowns and got over 200 yards in a game.
Q: What other position would you like to play?
A: I would like to play RB-CB-KR-PR-FS
Q: What else besides football do you do?
A: I sometimes run track at CSUN, and I work with kids with special needs.
Q: Which activities do you currently participate in?
A: I competitively play soccer and ride horses (3-day eventing). On more of a recreational level, I play coed touch football, hike, weight train, and play tennis.
Q: How often do you workout?
A: I would say on average, I workout 5-6 days per week.
Q: How do you maintain this workout regime while working a full-time office job?
A: I will admit it is hard to workout when I have been stuck in an office all day, so occasionally I will get up early and workout in the morning. However, recently, I have found that adjusting my eating habits so that I give myself a boost with a snack right after work helps keep my energy level up so I am not dragging.
Q: What keeps you motivated to stay in shape and workout? Are you looking to accomplish anything in particular?
A: Stress! Honestly, working out is my way of relieving stress. If I don’t sweat for a couple days, my mood is definitely affected. In addition to this, having grown up around the medical field, I am very aware of the health implications associated with poor eating habits and inactivity. If I can decrease my chances of having health problems by staying in shape, I will try my best to do that. As for accomplishing something in particular, anyone that knows me will tell you that I am always looking for the next challenge.
Q: Have you ever been injured? If so, did it affect you in any way?
Funny thing is I never suffered a bad injury until I was 25. Having played several sports growing up, I always wondered why all these people were having knee problems and wearing braces everywhere. I always thought “Well they must not be getting enough calcium to keep their bodies strong.” (I bet you can guess what my mom used to tell me as a kid to force me to drink my milk.) The first major injury I had was during a soccer game. I ended up breaking the side of my shinbone and tearing my meniscus. I was on crutches for 2 months, and let me tell you, I have never been so unhappy in my entire life. I am always on the go, so not being able to use one of my legs was devastating and forced me to make a lot of changes to my daily routine. I gained a lot of weight, and I just didn’t care. However, as soon as I was cleared to start doing physical activities, I was on that stationary bike strengthening the knee, visiting a physical therapist twice a week, doing anything I could. This injury really magnified just how lucky I am to have legs that I can run and jump on, and ever since, I have become even more involved in a variety of physical activities.
Q: What are your other interests besides sports?
A: Traveling is my #1. I am always planning the next adventure because there are just so many fascinating things to see and experience. I am also very interested in wildlife, so it comes to no surprise that Africa is one of my favorite places to visit. More recently, I have become interested in baking and cooking.
Q: What’s one thing you know now that you wish you had known before as far as being an athlete?
A: What you eat really does have a huge impact on your life. If you eat a lot of food at once, your body tires out. I feel so much better when I eat smaller meals throughout the day because my body is able to digest the food without making me tired. Also, when it comes to losing weight, you can workout for hours at a time, but if you don’t adjust your diet, you will not see a change.
Q: Since you now work on the business side of sports, what would you tell athletes who are just entering high school or college who want to pursue professional careers in the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc…?
A: Observe others or coach – I learned so much being on the sideline and just listening to the commentary about what players were doing. It allowed me to visualize what others had been telling me to do. Also, stay focused and try not to get distracted by things that will most likely not be important in 2-3 years. Lastly, take advantage of the education provided to you. It’s something that no one can take away from you.
Q: Did you grow up in the sports culture of rec leagues, club teams and travel ball?
A: Yes for baseball, football and basketball.
Q: What are you looking for in a college basketball program?
A: I am looking for a program that will provide me with an education and one that will perfect my skills and get me ready for the next level.
Q: Which NBA player would you compare yourself to and why?
A: Carmelo Anthony because I love the one-on-one game and pulling the deep 3. However, I do know how to explode to the basket and finish strong. I also love his passion and his never quit attitude in the games.
Q: Do you play any other sports?
A: I play football and baseball, as well as run track.
Q: Is there a story behind your uniform number?
A: My number is 17 because the best player in my eyes to ever grace the court is my dad, and his number was 17. I am honored to wear that number.
Q: What would you say is the best part of your game?
A: My drive to the basket; when I get it in my mind that I am going to the hole, no one can stop me. Also, I have 2 moves: the two step and the two-step rewind.
Q: Do you ever get bored or overwhelmed by playing too much basketball?
A: I never get bored or overwhelmed. The more basketball the better.
Q: What are you currently working on in your game?
A: Everything.
